Life as a Medical Copywriter in our London office

Medical Copywriter Natalie Thompson takes you through her anything-but-typical day working across our medical and creative teams

What is a Medical Copywriter?

A Medical Copywriter is essentially a hybrid of a Medical Writer and a Creative Copywriter. I’m able to deep dive into the heavy science behind a medicine, understand it, and rewrite about it in a more creative way that consumers can understand and relate to.

I always loved science and art and this job combines the best of both worlds. I get to learn about innovative scientific breakthroughs, how they work, and then I get to apply my creative thinking to find the best way to communicate it to others.

What’s a typical day like?

What I love is that due to the nature of the role, each day can be so varied and different, but that keeps it fresh and interesting. One day I could be analyzing clinical trial data for a multiple myeloma drug, the next day I could be sketching out concept ideas for a creative pitch on antibiotics. It keeps me learning and pushing myself.

Creatively, my day could be mixed with brainstorming sessions to come up with new ideas with an art director, writing on my own copy, new project briefings, or developing client presentations with the team.

Why Fishawack Health?

Compared to other places I’ve worked at, and interviewed at, I chose FH because their focus is on creating ‘work that works’ – beautiful pieces of creative that are always suited to a genuine need. Within just one year of working here, I’ve felt my skills and career grow more than anywhere else I’ve been. I’ve developed a much better understanding of agency-client relationships and created work I’ve been truly proud of.

It is such a supportive environment where you are truly given the credit you deserve.”

With all that work, is there time for play?

We definitely work hard, but also know how to have fun as a pack, and Fishawack Health has a great work/life balance. We had an amazing summer party at the Barbican Conservatory, a Christmas party at The Vaults (which included an amazing drag act), and countless creative lunches at some of the nicest places to eat in the area. On the creative team, everyone’s birthday is always celebrated with doughnuts/cake (keeping in mind our many dietary restrictions) and we even have our own office sea monkeys! All in all, it’s an inclusive social atmosphere that makes me feel really at home.
